Jason Hillman
Heartfelt Consulting
Jason is a 1990 graduate of Powell High School, where he competed in multiple sports throughout his high school career. He went on to compete at Dickinson State University, where he earned letters in both football and baseball. At DSU he was a player on four nationally ranked Blue Hawk football teams, two of which made it to the national quarterfinals and semifinals of the NAIA National Championship. Both of those teams are inductees in the DSU Athletic Hall of fame.
His first coaching position was as head varsity fast-pitch softball coach in St. Maries, Idaho. While in Idaho Jason also coached varsity football and middle school track. His Wyoming coaching experience includes varsity football and track at Tongue River high school, and football at Sheridan Junior High. He graduated with a degree in elementary education and physical education from Dickinson State University in Dickinson, ND, and a Master’s Degree in School Administration from the University of Wyoming.
Jason is also an accomplished educator. Prior to his current position at Parkside Elementary School in Powell, Wyoming, he was the Executive Director of Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative at The Ohio State University. There he directed the project Dr. Gay Su Pinnell started and honed his expertise in literacy/language arts instruction, working alongside world renowned educators. In 2017 Jason’s work was published by Scholastic in the book Responsive Literacy: A Comprehensive Framework.
Unfortunately, Jason and his family have felt the impact of cancer on multiple levels. He will use this platform to help attendees understand the effects cancer had on his two school-age daughters, and the lasting repercussions of dealing with cancer. He will give insight into what student athletes are going through when cancer invades their home.
Jason returned from Ohio to Powell to help care for his ailing father who was dealing with the debilitating effects of cancer and treatment. While working through a busy schedule as a school principal, Jason was also spending his nights and weekends tending to his father’s needs and raising a young family. Sadly, his dad passed from the cancer, but the struggle was not over yet. Just a year later, Jason’s wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the battle for his family continued. Thankfully, Amy is a cancer survivor and just recently got her 5 year clean bill of health and continues to do well. Throughout all of this Jason has been committed to his family, his work as a principal, and raising two very successful athletic daughters who will both be competing in track and field at the collegiate level next fall.
